Tell us about your experience installing Nestig wallpaper!

After installing Busy Brook wallpaper and Confetti wallpaper, I saw that Nestig’s wallpaper is high quality and so beautiful… Because the paper itself is so high quality, it is so much easier to install than others I have used in the past. The patterns are easy to match up. The ink itself is superior quality—the colors and details are beautiful!

What are the top 3 things that you look for in great quality wallpaper?

1. Material: How the wallpaper is made and printed has a huge affect on how it will look in the room and how easy it is to install. … it is so worth the investment to go with a company like Nestig that not only has beautiful patterns, but uses superior (and non toxic!) materials.

2. Pattern and Repeat: The pattern should repeat in a subtle and cohesive way, not in an obvious and overly repetitive manner.

3. Reputability: I view wallpaper as an investment in the room. I have learned the hard way over the years how important it is to order from a company you know and trust!

What are the benefits of choosing traditional, non-woven wallpaper compared to peel-and-stick options?

The biggest benefit: it will stay on the wall, and with new paste options, it won’t leave any damage if you decide to take it off someday. I have tried peel and stick options from different companies and price ranges—they all fell off the wall!

The other benefit is the look and feel. You can absolutely tell a difference in quality, even compared with expensive peel and stick options. Nestig’s traditional, non-woven wallpaper will hold up and look better every time.

For parents deciding to hire a professional wallpaper installer, what should they look for in an installer?

Word of mouth and personal recommendations are always so helpful! Other options are speaking to someone at a local hardware or wallpaper shop, or asking an interior designer for recommendations. Look for someone who can show you their work, visit the space to measure and give you a quote, respond to communication promptly and shows up when they say they will.

What are your tips for parents who have no experience working with wallpaper?

Order extra and have confidence in yourself! Watch videos of professionals installing wallpaper, and have an extra person on hand to help. Also so important: make sure you have everything you may need at hand before you begin, including:

  • A seam roller
  • A wallpaper smoother or brush
  • Clean cloths for wiping excess paste
  • A razor blade or a X-acto type knife that is new and sharp to cut off excess
  • A step ladder
  • Anything you need for the paste!

One thing I wish I had known when I was new to wallpapering: it gets easier! You really get a feel for how to work for the wallpaper, and by the end of your install you will feel like a pro. Wallpaper has such a big impact on a room, and is such a special and sweet way to decorate a nursery. Knowing you installed it is even more special!

What are some common mistakes that you see people make with wallpaper? Does Nestig’s wallpaper collection help prevent those mistakes?

One of the biggest mistakes I see installing the first panel by matching up the edge of the panel with the wall corner. It makes sense to start that way, but very rarely are walls actually level, so you end up with your wallpaper installed at a slight angle, which can be very noticeable in the pattern over the entire wall. Instead, use a level to draw a line on the wall (or use a laser level), and install the first panel completely level. When the first panel was installed correctly, you won’t get to the end of the wall and stand back to realize your pattern is gradually moving down or uphill.

Another mistake I see is not accounting for the pattern repeat when ordering and installing. This can be a very expensive problem!

Nestig’s calculator on their website accounts for their pattern and your wall size (and can calculate multiple walls). Nestig wallpaper comes in panels and several options come in an “AB” pattern. Every panel is clearly labeled, so it’s easy and straightforward to make sure you are installing the wallpaper correctly.
