A Love Letter to Island Life

Feel the oceanside breeze as photographer Alana Spencer walks us through her serene nursery on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Teeming with one-of-a-kind decor and plenty of sunshine, the room pays a heartfelt homage to the special place her family calls home.

What inspired your vision for the nursery?

The inspiration for our baby boy’s nursery was all about capturing the vibe of island life here on the North Shore. We wanted the space to reflect all the natural beauty that surrounds us—lush green mountains, neutral tones from our sandy beaches and soil, and touches of blue from the ocean surf our kids will grow up playing in. The aim was to create a space that feels peaceful and playful, and have a few key pieces that will grow with us through the years. I did put together an inspo board with textures like vintage rattan, soft fabrics, dark wood accents, calming colors and playful prints.

Palm Crib: I loved the Palm Crib immediately. Its color, rattan-like paneling, and dark wood accents were all elements I had throughout my mood board. I also love that it’s convertible, so it’ll grow with our baby boy, making it a long-lasting and meaningful piece.

Cloud Dresser: The Cloud Dresser is a beautiful compliment to our Palm Crib. Its clean design suits the room and the storage is so practical for holding all his baby essentials now and larger garments as he grows.

Customizable Rug: The rug was a must-have for bringing softness and personality into the room. ‘Island Boy’ sums up the vibe in his room and is what he’ll be, no matter where life takes him. It’s become a cozy spot for tummy time and play.

Arches Floating Shelf: This shelf is the perfect detail and nod to island life, where we see rainbows often. I love having two of them to stack and hold sentimental toys, books, and shoes.

Tell us about the lovely wall art and decor in this nursery.

As I’d done in my first nursery, the wall decor in this room is minimal and sentimental. A framed family polaroid, artwork by a close friend, a woven hat from a trip to a neighboring island, and a shell lei hang as a reminder of how special it is to live near the ocean. To tie in the little hints of black throughout the room, I also incorporated wall decals that look like hand-painted waves and palm trees. It was a fun way for me to create an accent wall without committing to paint or wallpaper.

Any tips for moms prepping for baby #2’s arrival?

Don’t stress too much about having everything perfect—your baby will bring the real magic to the space.

We like to think about nurseries as spaces for everyday magic, what are you most looking forward to in parenthood?

Every day of sharing moments and milestones in this room is magic, but it also holds an extra layer of meaning for us. This is the home and room my son took his first breath after an incredible water birth. Now, every time we're in this room together, I'm reminded of the beautiful journey that brought us here.
