In our Nursery 101 series, we talk to interior designers and experts about their favorite tips and how-to's on creating the perfect nursery.
Decor fills the nursery with soul—whether the piece is handmade, a gift from friends, or collected from travel. Below, interior designer Lisa Gilmore walks us through her story-filled nursery and talks about the importance of following your heart when curating decor for the space.
Layered, travel-inspired, artsy
As an interior designer it's often hard to do stuff for ourselves! We know too much of what is out there and what is possible to create. I was really having a hard time landing on a style for the nursery. At first I was leaning toward saturated colors and lots of patterns. However, I was on a trip to Morocco in December and stumbled upon this amazing lambs wool rug with soft terracotta, cream and a little blush. I immediately fell in love with it and knew it was perfect for the nursery! So I shipped it home and the design just started to fall together.
My daughter's birth flower is a daisy, so when I saw the Daisy wallpaper that was playful in an illustrative way, I knew I had to use it! Overall, I wanted the nursery to be inspired by travel, art and vintage items as well.

Don't feel like you have to stick to a theme, do things that make you feel good and bring a smile to your face. One very important element in Matilda's nursery is her ballerina mobile. My great grandmother made it for me when I was a baby and it hung in my nursery! I was so thrilled that my mom still had it. I honestly wasn't sure if it would look great with everything in the space, but I knew it was important to have it so I just went with it. It turned out looking so good and I love how it flows so well with the Paris art!
This is an area where I feel like following your heart and instinct plays a big role. If you really love it, you should incorporate it! Rooms don't have to be perfectly matchy matchy to work. A well designed room has some really great soul!
Yes! Isn't it fabulous?! One of my favorite things to do in my projects is millwork and I love to layer wallpaper in it. My husband and I currently rent our home, it's a 1920's cottage. I love wallpaper so much and wanted to have wallpaper in her nursery, but wasn't able to achieve it with the textured plaster walls plus being a rental. So I decided to have my carpenter build removable "millwork" to be wallpapered and installed using a sturdy french cleat. That way when we move, we can bring them with us and always change out the wallpaper in the future!
I'm most excited to immerse Matilda in the world of art, travel and design. Do not be afraid to follow your own style and passions. Mix the patterns, buy the vintage item you love and make your home a special place for you. I am excited to tell her all the stories behind the pieces of her room and I imagine one day listening to her playing dress up with friends and overhearing her say "my mommy and I bought this rug when we were in Morocco... but I wasn't born yet." :)
